Bridging for Better Outcomes: Leading and Following Across Cultures

Humans across the world have different preferences for how to lead and be led, and different organizational situations call for different leadership styles. This workshop is highly interactive and involves a simulation that explores how difference shows up in how to motivate others into action. Participants will learn about six different styles of leadership based on Daniel Goleman’s global leadership research, the values that drive each style, and the impact of power dynamics of these styles on those we work with and lead.

Learning outcomes

  • Gain awareness of how we prefer to motivate others into action, and how we prefer to be motivated into action.
  • Recognize differences in leadership styles and preferences across cultures, and how power shapes our reactions to these different styles.
  • Develop strategies for determining when it is useful to use each style, gaining fluency in multiple leadership and followership styles for more effective engagement, motivation, and retention across differences — thus fostering a stronger culture of inclusion in the workplace and beyond.
